the argireline clinical studies

Anyone who watches Dr. Oz knows the anti aging benefits of using a peptide ingredient he called “Argireline cream.”  The top products in skin care today are all either Argireline infused serums or creams.  It’s widely known in skin care circles that one of the pioneers of using this amazing peptide ingredient is SkinPro, maker’s of Elite Serum.  If you are buying any cosmeceutical infused skin care product to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, you must make sure it has this ROCK STAR ingredient.

What is the Argireline Peptide?

Lipotec research laboratory has released a substance in their products under the marketing name Argireline and under the claim that it is an anti-wrinkle synthetic compound. Ever since the specifics of this substance were released there has been considerable stir around the scientific community.

Let’s begin by the fact that the official name is Acetyl hexapeptide-3 and it is a peptide. It is a piece of Synaptosomal associated protein 25 (SNAP 25) encoded by the human gene of the same name and a substrate of a very famous and controversial substance: Botox (official botulinum toxin). The lovers of chemistry can research it under C34H60N14O12S, the sequence of Ac-Glu-Glu-Met-Gln-Arg-Arg-NH2, or under the related compound of Gusperimus Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine.

What does it do?

The laboratory’s notes accompanying the release of Argireline say that the ingredient tries to mitigate the visible effects of the aging process by smoothing the lines and the wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. It does so by restricting the reactions in the body that cause contraction or motion of the muscles such as frowning or smiling.

Here comes the first part of the debate on this compound which is similar to the debate about the originating compound of botox. Its use results in expressionless faces that seem plastic and not natural.

The second part of the debate strongly believes that this kind of compounds should not be released into the market without proper and thorough testing. The manufacturer’s laboratories may have conducted an appropriate number of in vitro or in vivo tests, but without the existence of results from double blind clinical trials, no chemical compound should be allowed to circulate as safe.

For the uninitiated, in vitro means outside a living organism. It refers to tests conducted in single cells or molecules taken out of their biological context within the controlled conditions of a laboratory. In vivo on the other hand means the tests conducted in a living organism as a whole such as an animal or a human being.

In a study, some of the participants constitute the control group and some others make up the test group. A double blind clinical trial is the most stringent way of making sure of unbiased and pure scientific results because neither the participants nor the researchers know who is in the control group and who is in the test group. It is usually the results of these studies that produce the final results of a test to a chemical substance.

Argireline was released in 2001. Fourteen years may sound a lot but they are not when we are talking about long term observation of the effects of a chemical substance to the human skin.  The acceptable practice on this requires that a compound be studied for at least 25 to 30 years before such effects can become even visible. Keep in mind that it takes at least this amount of time for the damage of the elements of nature to become noticeable.

After 14 years, dermatologists suggest that the products containing between 10 and 20% of argireline provide the best results. It is becoming popular too fast as it supposedly provides real tangible results quickly. For the skeptics, the compound is a miniature kind of plastic surgery that may leave users practically expressionless.

Everyone wants to fight the wrinkles and lines that appear with aging. It is understandable. If this is done through collagen production or through argireline implementation is a choice for the users to make. However, either of these choices must include the health safety of the user. Without the proper studies and ample proof on this issue, every substance should be used with extreme caution.
